A Bump in the Med

Program Title

A Bump in the Med

Brief description

The "bump" of Libya into the Mediterranean forms an isolated ecosystem of unsuspected riches being, as it is, on the edge of the Sahara.

Synopsis

The region of Libya called Cyrenaica is a forgotten Eden of unsuspected beauty and diversity.
Rainfall over average on the elevations near the coast make it possible a cover of forest and Mediterranean woodlands. This, combined to the fact that behind this area begin the boundless Sahara, make it an "island" inhabited by plants and animals which are really carrying a life on the edge.

This isolated strip of mountains and hills ends up into an uncontaminated sea hosting species at the border-line between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
The sea is particularly rich and researchers are looking after one of the last remaining colonies of monk seals in the whole med-basin.
The ancient cities of Cyrene and Apollonia stand half-submerged allowing portraits of marine life in a unique architectural environment.
