Lake Malawi is one of the largest lakes on earth. It stretches for 600 kilometres along the Great Rift Valley, reaching 80 kilometres at its widest point. In this ancient lake a phenomenal explosive evolution of fish has occurred: there are about 700 species - astonishingly a greater number than can be found in all the freshwater bodies of Europe and North America combined. ![]() But also the shores of the lake host great biodiversity. Roan antelopes, elands, reedbucks, and their predators, are to be found along the coastline and on the hills above it. The landscape is unique and very unusual for the whole of Africa. |
